Regional media plays a crucial role as a trusted source of local news, holding the government accountable and fostering a sense of community by covering issues that directly impact residents’ lives.
Unlike national outlets, local newspapers focus on stories that larger media often overlook—such as school board decisions, community events, and regional health or environmental concerns. This close-to-home reporting empowers citizens to make informed decisions and hold local officials accountable.
Last year, thanks to a generous donation from Marcus Storch, we launched a mentoring program for five local newsrooms, which included week-long guest editor visits. As we conclude the first year of the project, we’ve identified several key challenges facing local media outlets in Latgale. These include limited original content production, a lack of digital skills, and a steadily shrinking subscriber base for print editions. Additionally, many newsrooms operate with minimal staff and resources, often in environments where journalists face personal risks, limited access to training, and fewer professional networks.
With these challenges in mind, the Center’s goal for year two is to strengthen local journalism in Latgale through targeted support and training. This initiative aims to provide practical solutions, ensuring that regional media remains strong, independent, and well-connected to the communities it serves.
Starting at the end of 2024, the Center will organize monthly, day-long practical training sessions for regional newsrooms, bringing in media professionals, university staff, and subject-matter experts. These sessions will equip journalists with essential skills, enhance newsroom resilience, and foster a supportive professional network—critical components for navigating today’s complex media landscape.
