The RESNORDBALT project aims to strengthen cooperation among media organisations, researchers and journalism support institutions in the Nordic and Baltic region. The initiative focuses on exploring how journalism can remain sustainable and resilient while responding to major societal challenges such as climate change, digital disruption and increasing cyber threats. By bringing together partners with complementary expertise, the project seeks to create a foundation for long-term collaboration and future joint initiatives.
The project partners represent different areas of expertise and national contexts within the region. Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga contributes its experience in training media managers from the Baltic and Nordic countries. Finnish Foundation for Media and Development (VIKES) brings knowledge on sustainable journalism and journalists’ working conditions. The Media and Journalism Research Center (Estonia) contributes research and policy expertise related to media development, while Stowarzyszenie Gazet Lokalnych (Association of Local Newspapers, Poland) provides connections to regional and local newsrooms. Together with the broader Sustainable Journalism Partnership (Sweeden) network, these organisations aim to address shared regional challenges.
Through dialogue, knowledge exchange and concept development, the project will explore practical approaches to strengthening media sustainability, digital resilience and responsible innovation in journalism. Particular attention will be given to working conditions in the media sector and challenges such as online harassment and disinformation, which affect journalists across the region. As a seed initiative, the project primarily aims to establish a stronger collaborative platform and prepare the ground for future joint projects and funding opportunities.
This project is funded by the Swedish Institute.
